Kids who've never ridden a school bus can climb aboard and practice August 8, at Hilliard Davidson High School, where Hilliard City Schools is hosting a hands-on event for families and prospective bus drivers alike.

The First-Time Riders & Learn to Drive a School Bus Event runs from 8 a.m. to noon in the Band Practice Lot and Transportation Center at 5100 Davidson Road. Classes start August 19.

For new riders

Students heading to the bus stop for the first time this fall can explore a school bus up close, learn safety tips, practice boarding and riding, and meet members of the district's transportation team. The district's announcement lists all 12 Hilliard elementary schools, both Sixth Grade Stations, and the preschool program as target audiences, signaling the event is geared toward the district's youngest riders.

For adults who want to drive

Adults interested in becoming a full-time or substitute bus driver can meet transportation staff, learn about the position, and get behind the wheel of a school bus with a certified trainer on-site. The district's announcement encourages anyone curious about the position to attend and learn how to join the Hilliard City Schools team.

Back-to-school calendar taking shape

The August 8 bus event kicks off a busy stretch for Hilliard families. Meet the Teacher nights are scheduled across multiple elementary schools on August 17, two days before classes begin August 19. The district serves roughly 16,300 students across 24 schools.
