A Hilliard police officer shot a man in the chest on Wednesday, Sept. 16, after the suspect allegedly pulled a gun on officers trying to arrest him at a northwest Columbus apartment complex.

The suspect was hospitalized and is stable at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital, Hilliard Police Chief Michael Woods said. No officers were injured.

Two Hilliard Division of Police officers arrived around 8 p.m. at 4635 Lowell Lane in The Wendell apartment complex. The complex sits off Riggins Road, just west of Britton Parkway, the Columbus Dispatch reported. The officers were serving an arrest warrant tied to an indecent exposure incident at a Hilliard grocery store on Friday, Sept. 11, according to Woods.

During a conversation with the adult male suspect, the man pulled a firearm from his pocket, according to a news release from Hilliard community relations administrator, Jarrod Clay, as reported by the Dispatch. One officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect.

Brian Steel, president of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 9, confirmed the shooting and said the suspect sustained a chest wound with no exit wound, according to WSYX.

Hilliard police called in the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), part of the Ohio Attorney General's Office, to investigate the shooting following department protocol. BCI's Crime Scene and Force Investigation units responded to the scene, 10TV reported. A BCI spokesperson confirmed no officers were hurt.

A 10TV reporter at the scene reported seeing at least a dozen police cars in the parking lot near the apartment complex along the 4000 block of Riggins Road. Multiple Columbus police units also responded to assist.

Woods called it the first shooting involving a Hilliard police officer in at least five years.

The chief said he would not identify the suspect until Thursday, Sept. 17, pending consultation with BCI. No information about the suspect's identity, the specific charges on the warrant, or whether officers had prior contact with the man has been released.

NBC4 described a struggle between the suspect and officers before the gun was drawn. The official Hilliard police news release, as reported by the Dispatch, described only a conversation preceding the shooting. The accounts have not been reconciled.
