A man shot by a Hilliard officer Wednesday, Sept. 16, allegedly pulled a gun while police tried to arrest him on a public indecency warrant, Chief Michael Woods said.

The suspect was hospitalized in stable condition after the shooting, which happened around 8 p.m. on Lowell Lane. No officers were injured.

Woods said two officers went to the location to serve the warrant, which stemmed from a Friday, Sept. 11, incident at a local grocery store. The suspect allegedly exposed himself inside the store, according to 10TV. After several days of investigation, police identified the suspect and went to make the arrest Wednesday night.

During a conversation with the two officers, the adult male suspect allegedly pulled a firearm from his pocket, police said. An officer then fired, hitting the man at least once.

As we reported Sept. 17, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) responded to investigate the shooting. BCI's Crime Scene and Force Investigation units were both called to the scene. The agency's involvement is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings in Ohio.

The suspect faces public indecency charges, with "the strong possibility of more charges to follow," Woods said. The chief did not identify the suspect by name.

Woods told 10TV the shooting marked the first time in several years that a Hilliard officer had been involved in a shooting. A 10TV reporter observed more than a dozen police vehicles in the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex near the 4000 block of Riggins Road.

Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #9 President Brian Steel confirmed no officers were hurt, NBC4 reported.

A neighbor on Lowell Lane told WSYX they were sitting on their couch when they heard a loud bang outside and initially thought a car crash had happened.

BCI's investigation remains active. No timeline for its completion has been announced.
