A family-run bagel shop with New Jersey roots has opened on Cemetery Road, giving Hilliard its first dedicated East Coast-style bagel spot.
Bagels & Jam Co., at 4465 Cemetery Rd., soft-opened July 16 and has since drawn attention from Fox 28's "Good Day Columbus" and a Columbus Dispatch roundup that counted it among three new bagel shops to open in the Columbus area in July.
Co-owner Sunny Muheisen runs the business with her father-in-law, Abdul Jamhour, a pastry chef with more than 30 years of experience. Muheisen's husband, mother-in-law and children are also involved. The name is a nod to the family: "Jamhour" shortened to "Jam."
Muheisen grew up in New Jersey, where her family owned Muheisen's Bagel & Deli. She told the Columbus Dispatch on July 16 that replicating authentic bagels in Ohio required solving one big variable.
"To get true New York/New Jersey style bagels, the water plays a key role," Muheisen said. After trial and error, she said she's happy with the results and eager for transplants from the tri-state area to taste-test.
The menu goes beyond bagels. Customers can order rugelach, sandwiches, salads, wraps, omelettes and other baked goods.
Destination Hilliard, the city's tourism and economic-development arm, promoted the opening on Facebook, calling it "Hilliard's newest bagel spot" and noting the family-owned shop serves fresh bagels, sandwiches, omelettes and baked goods.
Muheisen said on July 16 that a grand opening would follow in a few weeks. No date has been publicly announced.
The shop is open daily. Hours listed at opening were 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., though the business's Instagram account (@bagels.jam_columbus) has more recently posted hours of 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Customers should check the shop's social media or call ahead to confirm.
