Mosquitoes trapped in Hilliard have tested positive for West Nile virus. Franklin County Public Health plans to spray six neighborhoods Monday, Sept. 21, starting at 8:30 p.m.
The targeted areas are in northeast and northwest Hilliard, WSYX reported:
- Britton Farms
- Carrington Place
- Hampton Oaks
- Dorset Glen
- Heritage Lakes
- Brookfield
Spraying is weather permitting. Franklin County Public Health has not announced a makeup date if conditions force a delay.
Franklin County leads Ohio in positive mosquito pools
The Hilliard spraying comes as Franklin County leads the state in West Nile virus detections. The Ohio Department of Health's vector-borne disease update, current as of Sept. 17, counted 668 positive mosquito pools in Franklin County. That is the highest total of any county in Ohio in 2026.
Statewide, eight people had contracted West Nile virus this year, including two in Franklin County, according to the state health department. Franklin County Public Health tests some of its own mosquito samples in addition to those processed by the state.
How Hilliard's spraying program works
The city of Hilliard contracts with Franklin County Public Health for mosquito control, according to city records. Hilliard does not spray on its own. The county health department sprays after a trapped mosquito tests positive for West Nile virus.
When spraying is planned, the city notifies residents through social media and, when possible, through its e-newsletter, "Happening in Hilliard."
How to request spraying
Franklin County Public Health does not spray individual properties. Residents who want their neighborhood considered for future treatment can submit a request through the agency. Those requests help the department identify areas where spraying may be needed.
