Hilliard residents can drop off old pumpkins for free composting starting Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Public Service Department parking lot at 3790 Municipal Way.
The drop-off site will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week through Monday, Dec. 7, according to the City of Hilliard. The city offers the program each year.
Pumpkins free of bleach and paint are suitable for composting, the city said. The city recommends a cayenne pepper solution to discourage animals from nibbling.
Wildlife-safe décor tips
The Hilliard Environmental Sustainability Commission (ESC) offered tips for keeping yard decorations safe for local wildlife. Fake spiderwebs can trap birds, bats and other animals; the ESC recommends keeping them indoors or switching to window clings.
Bright or flashing holiday lights can disorient animals at night. Turning off outdoor displays before bed reduces the disturbance. Loud audio decorations can also disrupt wildlife after dark, the commission said.
The ESC also advises checking decorations regularly, since strings can come loose and items can blow away.
Holiday light recycling
The city also offers a holiday light recycling program. Details will be announced closer to the end of the year.
