A $2.2 million culvert replacement on U.S. 33 near Fishinger Road is pushing ahead despite heavy rains that hit Central Ohio earlier this month, with the Ohio Department of Transportation reporting the work is in its final stages.

The project, which closed a stretch of U.S. 33 (Riverside Drive) between Fishinger Road and River Park Drive on Aug. 3, is now in Step 4 of 5, according to ODOT's project page. The closure was originally estimated at 45 days, putting the expected reopening window around mid-September.

ODOT District 6 said on X on Aug. 24 that the work continues to make progress and will improve drainage by allowing stormwater to flow safely under the roadway, reducing flooding risks for years to come.

What the project does

Crews are replacing a culvert-style bridge under U.S. 33 near River Park Drive and installing a new storm sewer at the U.S. 33 and Fishinger Road intersection. The work falls within Columbus and Upper Arlington city limits, but the detour runs squarely through Hilliard.

What Hilliard drivers need to know

The road is still closed.

ODOT's posted detour sends northbound and westbound traffic along Fishinger Road or Cemetery Road to the Hilliard I-270 entrance and exit ramps. Southbound drivers coming from Dublin should use SR 161 (West Bridge Street) to the Dublin I-270 ramps.

COTA rerouted Lines 73 and Zoo Bus when the closure began Aug. 3; the transit agency said no stops are being missed during the detour.

ODOT lists the full project completion as fall 2026, though no specific reopening date has been confirmed. The estimated construction cost is $2,220,000.
