Construction crews have broken ground on a 135-home development in western Hilliard that will bring single-family houses and rowhomes priced between $500,000 and $850,000 to about 32 acres north of Bridgeview Trace and west of Alton Darby Creek Road.

An Onyx+East spokesperson confirmed that site development and utility work are underway at The Village at Alton Place, NBC4 reported. The Indianapolis-based builder acquired the land in May 2026 and expects home sales to begin in spring 2027.

It's the company's first for-sale project in the Columbus area.

Plans call for homes with at least three bedrooms and 1,800 to 2,800 square feet of finished living space. The layout emphasizes walkability: front porches face the street, garages load from rear alleys, and a trail through the neighborhood will connect to a shared-use path along Alton Darby Creek Road, linking residents to The Well recreation center and the Heritage Rail Trail.

A playground, pavilion and open space are also planned.

Part of the broader Alton Place plan

The Village sits within the 343.3-acre Alton Place development that Hilliard approved in 2020 near Roberts and Alton Darby Creek roads. That master plan included single-family and attached housing, commercial areas and 171.7 acres of open space.

City Engineer Letty Schamp told NBC4 that developer Dwight McCabe has sold portions of the larger Alton Place property to individual builders. Schamp estimated the western single-family section is about 70% built.

A separate mixed-use area between Bridgeview Trace and Roberts Road, envisioned with shops and restaurants, has not begun vertical construction and is separate from the Onyx+East project.

Roberts Road delays won't affect Village timeline

Delayed roadway and infrastructure work along Roberts Road, handled by Alton Place LLC, had been expected to resume June 1 but stalled because a new water line had not been submitted for chlorination. Schamp told NBC4 in July that the line has since been chlorinated, but the developer had not provided the city with an updated construction schedule.

The Roberts Road work has "no bearing whatsoever" on the Onyx+East development, Schamp said.

What's next

Hilliard City Council scheduled a public hearing on Aug. 24 on Ordinance 26-18, which would vacate roughly 0.195 acres of unused Brockton Road right-of-way within the Village property. The road was platted in 1955 but never built, and no public utilities were installed there. Vacating the land would allow it to be folded into the residential development.

The outcome of that hearing had not been confirmed as of Aug. 25. Home sales remain on track for spring 2027.
