Hilliard residents heading west on I-70 face a major detour after flooding buckled the interstate in eastern Indiana, just nine miles from the Ohio state line.

The westbound lanes of I-70 are closed indefinitely near Centerville Road in Wayne County, Indiana, after what Wayne County Emergency Management Agency director Todd Harmeson described as a "structural collapse." Photos from the Indiana Department of Transportation show water flowing beneath cracked asphalt. No reopening timeline has been announced.

ODOT has activated digital message boards in Columbus warning westbound drivers well before they reach the closure. ODOT press secretary Matt Bruning told 10TV the typical alternate route along U.S. 40 near the state line is also flooded, making the detour even longer than usual.

"The reason we chose to put those signs up in Columbus even is because when you're heading from Columbus or Pittsburgh or areas between to Indianapolis, your best route at this point may very well be I-71 down to Cincinnati, around 275 and then 74 to get into Indianapolis," Bruning said.

INDOT's official detour for traffic already on I-70 routes drivers onto U.S. 27, then U.S. 36, then state Route 9 before rejoining the interstate. But Harmeson warned that many state highways in western Wayne County remain closed due to flooding, and urged motorists to stick to the prescribed detour.

The closure follows days of heavy rain across eastern Indiana. Multiple counties were under flash flood warnings Wednesday, Aug. 12, into Thursday, Aug. 13. Wayne County reported at least a dozen water rescues, though no injuries or fatalities had been confirmed as of Thursday, according to FOX59.

Bruning said ODOT and neighboring agencies are monitoring for additional rain, warning that even modest precipitation could worsen existing flooding conditions.
