Hilliard Bradley's softball team capped a historic spring with one more piece of recognition: third place in the Columbus Dispatch's central Ohio Girls Team of the Year vote, results published Friday, Aug. 7.

The Jaguars received 10.2% of the reader vote after winning the program's first-ever OHSAA Division I state championship. Thomas Worthington field hockey won the poll with 65.3%, and Danville softball finished second at 22.7%.

The vote is a footnote to what Bradley accomplished on the field. The Jaguars went 27-5, earned the top seed in the Division I district tournament and steamrolled their first three postseason opponents by a combined 37-1. In the state final June 4 in Akron, Bradley trailed Lancaster before scoring two runs in the seventh inning to win 7-5. Sophia Lopez delivered the go-ahead hit, a double, according to the Dispatch's reporting.

The Jaguars had never reached the state tournament until this season. Bradley had won four district titles but always saw its run end before the final four.

Head coach Kevin Moody, who has led softball programs at all three Hilliard high schools since 1986, was separately voted the Dispatch's central Ohio Girls Coach of the Year with 48.1% of the vote. Moody owns 726 career wins, the most in central Ohio history and second-most in Ohio.

That total grew throughout the season. Moody hit 700 career victories on March 26, a milestone Bradley High School celebrated on X.

Twenty-six more wins later, the Jaguars were state champions.

Moody was honored at the Central Ohio High School Sports Awards ceremony June 22 at Upper Arlington High School.
