Downed power lines have shut Amity Road between Carter Road and Scioto & Darby Road, and the Franklin County Engineer's Office has not set a reopening date.

The Franklin County Engineer's Office posted the closure on X at 6:56 p.m. Aug. 11, saying the road will reopen once the issue has been resolved and it is safe for traffic.

No detour was posted.

The closure is one of several road disruptions caused by severe storms that tore through central Ohio on Tuesday. The National Weather Service recorded an 82-mph wind gust at John Glenn Columbus International Airport and said a possible tornado may have struck the north side of Columbus, according to WOSU.

As we reported Tuesday, the storms knocked out power to more than 130,000 AEP Ohio customers by 1:30 p.m., with Franklin County seeing the heaviest concentration of outages. Hilliard also saw a railroad crossing at Avery Road close after a train stopped because of downed trees.

AEP Ohio director of operations Matt Bennett said Tuesday that power restoration would take days because of the extent of damage, with out-of-state crews arriving from as far as Oklahoma to help. "We're gonna need some patience from our customers, cause this is going to take a couple days, and we understand that that's not great for them to hear, but there's an extensive amount of damage," Bennett told WOSU.

As of Aug. 12, no follow-up from the Franklin County Engineer's Office confirmed the road had reopened. Drivers who use Amity Road should plan alternate routes until the county posts an update.

AEP Ohio advises residents who spot downed wires to call 911 or AEP Ohio directly rather than approaching the lines. The Franklin County Engineer's Office is posting updates on its X account, @franklincoeng.
